[ Don't Turn Away ]
[ A Look Deeper ]
Personality: Laila is a small ball of nervous energy. She is always moving, even if it is just rocking slightly on the spot, or playing with her hair. When she talks, she talks with her hands; sometimes just gesticulating, sometimes using sign-language along with speaking. Very shy, Laila either clams up completely when meeting new people, or talks and talks and talks. She is exceptionally friendly and trusting, and always takes people at face-value, believing there to be good in everyone. She is unendingly loyal to her friends, and believes that they can do no wrong.
Rather idealistic, Laila believes that there are many different ways of looking at the world, and thoroughly dislikes being at school for the reason that there has to be a right or a wrong answer. In her mind, there are shades of grey and not just black and white. Her most hated class is literature, because she feels that other people cannot appreciate books and stories in quite the same way she can. Although she loves to share her favourite books with her friends, Laila would much prefer it if no-one but herself and them were allowed to read. Especially aloud.
Laila is hopelessly romantic, and has yet to find a partner who lives up to her rose-tinted view of love. She is a very submissive girl, and longs to find someone who will take charge of her, be her lord and master (as it were), though she would never tell anyone that openly (unless, possibly, they had her very inebriated!). As with many teenage girls, she simply wishes to be the centre of someone's world. She is completely dense when it comes to romantic situations, and sometimes cannot see that someone is flirting with her. Often, Laila would like to think they were flirting, but wouldn't dare to believe it.
Due to having been around the Care System, Laila's self-esteem is not the greatest. She has good days and bad days, but as a whole she does not think she is that special. She feels lucky that she has finally been adopted, and certainly counts her blessings on that front. Nonetheless, she is very good at comparing herself to others, especially in Japan where Idols are everywhere, and their tiny Asian figures are much smaller than Laila's Western curves.
Exceptionally non-confrontational, Laila will not correct someone, even when she knows they are wrong. She would rather sit back and take it, or rant at length to her friends or her mother, than get into an argument. The only time this does not occur is when someone has done something she views as a "wrong" to her friends or family. Then she loses her (very well-kept) temper and will lash out at the offender.

[ Present History ]
Life did not begin easily for Laila. She was given up for adoption at birth, the young mother feeling unfit to raise a child alone, and passed through the care system for a few years being bounced from foster family to foster family. In that time she moved countries (Germany to England) and at nine settled in with a long-term foster family. She was unhappy at not being adopted, and unhappy that she was very different from the other children in her school; she hated being outside in the sun, much preferring the cool of the shade, and she found most outdoor activities dull and boring. So she spent her time reading, and mentally writing elaborate stories as an escape from the reality of her world.
After a year of living with the long-term foster family, Laila found a home with a young couple, who whisked her away to Japan as soon as the papers were signed. The change in scenery and culture was an utter shock to her, and Laila spent the first few months living in the new country hidden away in her room. Her adoptive mother was Japanese by birth, and had wanted to return to her home country once she had done with schooling. Meeting and getting married to her husband was a pleasant occurrence she had not factored in, nor had she factored in the fact they both wanted children, but she was unable to have them.
Eventually, her mother's enthusiasm won her over, and Laila began taking part in day-to-day life once more. As before, she rarely participated in outdoor activities, still preferring to remain inside with a book. She did, however, take an interest in music, and began learning the violin. It appeared she had a talent for the instrument, and soon Laila was playing in school festivals. Though the attention made the girl nervous, she loved actually performing, so she was able to overlook her shyness.
When she was thirteen, Laila began noticing that she really wasn't like most girls her age. Aside from the obvious difference in her Western appearance to their Eastern, the teenager noticed that she was becoming more and more sensitive to the sunlight. Where the girls in her class would rush out to soak up the sun's rays, Laila would stay inside. If she was required to go outside, she would squint so much her face screwed up. It made her increasingly self-conscious, not helped by the fact she was already slightly self-conscious about her odd blue eyes in the first place. After words with her parents, Laila began wearing tinted glasses, which both helped hide the odd colour from others, and helped (to a degree) protect her from the light.
Loud noises were another thing she noticed she was much more sensitive to as she grew; the one time she allowed herself to be dragged to karaoke, Laila had to be taken home with a blinding migraine. It did not take a genius to notice that fewer and fewer people were inviting her to go places with them, and so the teenager withdrew further into herself. She would still happily assist anyone who needed her help, but other than that Laila spent her time either reading, or playing the violin.
Her sixteenth birthday was a turning point in her life; it was the day she met her aunt. Tsubasa Masako was the most glamorous woman Laila had ever met, and she fell instantly in love. She was an ex-top Otokoyaku, and still worked within theatre. She regaled her niece with tales of the theatre, and Laila was completely entranced. She decided then-and-there that she wished to become a violinist within one of the Takarazuka troupes. The teenager could honestly say that her sixteenth birthday was the best day of her life.
In her spare time, when not doing homework or practising the violin, Laila likes to take gentle walks around the city. She still avoids being out in the sun too long, as it still makes her eyes hurt and she burns like crazy, but since she met Masako, she has slowly started coming out of her shell.
