Alexis couldn't help a little flush as she was complimented. It was still somewhat unusual in this country; generally her mannerisms and speech patterns tended to invite the opposite.
"What drove you to teach?"
"What drove me?" She pursed her lips slightly, eyes growing thoughtful behind her glasses. "To be entirely honest, Mr Kalloni, I am not entirely certain whether there was an event that truly drove me that way." She sipped her tea, still clearly pondering the question. "I think, however, it is simply that I love to learn." Alexis smiled slightly, remembering how her father used to say he was glad that she had such an insatiable appetite for knowledge. He had never really explained why it made him so happy, but perhaps it had something to do with her late mother.
"I have had a number of good governesses and teachers in my past," she continued after finishing her cup of tea and placing it carefully back down on the saucer. "They have all inspired me to do my best, work as hard as my body allows me. Perhaps, in a way, they have had a hand in shaping the future I wish for myself."

Mavros listened with interest as Alexis spoke. He tea cup was less than half full as he sipped is unconsciously. "A governess, that's like a teacher who lives with you, right?" He set his cup down, now less full than a moment ago. "I only had regular teachers, in a public school system that had it's funding cut back a little more each year..." He shrugged. "So, you keep calling my 'Mr. Kalloni.' I certainly won't try to infringe on what you're comfortable with, but I don't mind being called by my first name, or even 'Mac' as some of my co-workers like. And, if it is all right with you, may I call you 'Alexis?"

"A governess is indeed a teacher who resides with you." Alexis agreed, smiling faintly. She was used to people being slightly surprised by her schooling. It was, after all, rather unusual.
She herself was rather surprised by the young gentleman's forwardness. She was certainly not used to anyone wishing to be on more friendly terms in such a short period of time. Nonetheless, it was...nice.
"It would be an honour, Mavros. And 'Alexis' is fine with me." Impulsively she smiled properly. "I also answer to Lexi." She told him.

"Then Alexis, as the night seems to be creeping up and I should be getting on my way..." She moved his cup toward the center of the table and looked at Alexis with earnest. Here went nothing and everything all at once. "Perhaps we could arrange to see each other again? I've enjoyed this time with you, and would love to talk more."

There was something in Mavros's eyes that gave Alexis pause. She would usually have politely demurred, perhaps suggesting for them to bump into one another again without making any specific arrangements. However, she truly did not wish to brush the young gentleman off in such a way. Instead Alexis nodded.
"That would be most pleasant, Mavros." She said. "I would enjoy it."

Mavros grinned calmly on the outside, but inside he was practically doing jumping jacks.
He had done it! He had finally found, almost entirely without a reason for doubt, his missing princess. He had managed to keep her attention and get to know her, and now he had a second date- Er, meeting.
Mavros had to mentally scold himself as he stood. "I don't want you to rush yourself on my part," he said. He pulled out his stenobook from work and flipped through it until he found blank pages. He wrote down his phone number, just calmly enough to border on a scribble, and tore it out. "As your schedule no doubt has greater demands and mine, to date, does not, I believe it would be more polite to allow you to decide when would be more convenient." As he offered the paper, his heart skipped a beat.
It was show of good faith and, hopefully, gentlemanly stuff, but it was also a risk. What if she decided not to call? What if she really didn't like him and only put up with him for this occasion? What if?

Alexis stared at the paper for a moment, utterly nonplussed. No-one, in her life, had ever been so trusting of her from the get-go. He trusted her to call, to be the one responsible for their next meeting. She felt a smile spreading across her lips, the rare one that tended to make her look younger than she was. What was it about this young gentleman that encouraged such reaction from her?
"Thank you," she said simply, accepting the paper. "I will consult my teaching schedule when I return home, and will inform you of the most logical dates for our next meeting." She carefully tucked the paper into her handbag. Unlike probably every woman her age, Alexis did not own a mobile phone.
"What time is most convenient for me to telephone you?" She queried.

Hope remained kindled. "In the evenings," Mavros said. "I work from early morning to late afternoon. I never work Sunday, and occasionally have Saturday off." He smiled. "Until then." He nodded his head and calmly walked to the entrance. Inside, however, he was feeling that seldom-present charge of victory.

Alexis nodded, mentally noting down the times that would be logical for her to telephone. She was glad she did not have, as some of her friends did, an aversion to the telephone.
"Until then, Mavros." She smiled. "I bid you a good evening."
